Guest Dougwzz99 Posted March 4, 2004 Report Posted March 4, 2004 So I've just got a Galaxy Ghia 1.9TDi 130, very pleased with it so far. But I'm slightly confused by something the Owners Guide mentions on page 41 regarding the ATC aircon control: "The system should only be switched off if a malfunction occurs". Huh? Why shouldn't I switch it off regardless if I want to. Say for example when I've just started up and I don't want to have any air through the vents until the engine warms up. Is there some good reason why Ford don't want you to turn the ATC off  TIA. --Doug. Quote
Dally Posted March 5, 2004 Report Posted March 5, 2004 My Galaxy manual does not say that - in fact it tells you how to put it off! They do, however, suggest that you set it and forget it. (mine is a V6 though and not a diesel) You say:-"Huh? Why shouldn't I switch it off regardless if I want to. Say for example when I've just started up and I don't want to have any air through the vents until the engine warms up" I think you're worrying too much about this. The ATC is intelligent enough to not blow cold air - it only starts to do so when it's warmed up sufficiently. Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted March 5, 2004 Report Posted March 5, 2004 ...and you must have some air coming into the car, even when cold, or you will suffer CO2 poisoning (eventually...). I notice the effect of no fresh air if I accidentally leave heater settings on "recirculation" for too long. The ATC is sufficiently clever that it automatically switches recirc off after a set period of time (about 10 minutes IIRC). The ATC system will not "drown" you with cold air from the face vents when the outside air is cold. It directs it upwards to the screen and side windows until there is sufficient heat coming through, whereupon it then opens the flow to the vents. It is a very clever system. Quote
seatkid Posted March 5, 2004 Report Posted March 5, 2004 I don't think switching off the climate control will cut off the outside air positively (in the way recirc does) - having said that, I don't know if recirc is switched off when you turn off the system. I have got into the habit of turning off my cc for the first 3 or 4 miles, the engine warms up a lot quicker, and I don't get cold/damp air faffing about. The heated seats do the biz. I think my cc must have failed its exams, I don't think its that intelligent, its certainly stubborn to obey my commands - turn up the fan a bit - doh! not that much - doh! more than that - cr*p! Whys it decided to blow like mad all of a sudden? (Ford dealer - there's nothing wrong sir  :o ) I reckon the reason most people on the forum are so happy is the amount of R134A they inhale from their leaking evaporators!!! Biggest gripe with the ventilation is you can't get cool(er) air from the face vents with the heating on. Quote
MrT Posted March 5, 2004 Report Posted March 5, 2004 A full galaxy with the climate control turned off or even on econony in cold wet conditions mists up very very quickly. It surprised me how quickly (seconds) this happened. Quote
Guest Dougwzz99 Posted March 5, 2004 Report Posted March 5, 2004 I agree with seatkid on this. It does seem that turning the ATC off for the first 3/4 miles helps the engine warm up quicker and avoids any cold air coming through the vents. I think the off position forces all the vents to closed position. Ford are probably being ultra-cautious and want to avoid being sued in case someone has an accident due to their windows being misted up and tries to blame it on having the ATC switched off!!! Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted March 5, 2004 Report Posted March 5, 2004 "Econ" gives same functions as "Auto" but without the dehumidifying effect of the aircon. "Off" shuts all automatic vent movements off but I doubt that it stops fresh air from entering the cabin. Quote
Guest Andyjflet Posted March 6, 2004 Report Posted March 6, 2004 Where does the off button live, I cant turn mine off just Econ or Auto ??? Quote
Dally Posted March 6, 2004 Report Posted March 6, 2004 Andyjflet You have to press the front fan speed down selector button a couple of times. When the fan speed is zero, the systen switches off. Quote
Guest T120 Posted March 6, 2004 Report Posted March 6, 2004 We ways turn the recirc on for the first 10/15 mins when starting off on a cold morning as it circulates the cab air through the heater matrix not cold air from outside, as Dougwwz99 says but we have not got ATC just air con; but this has the same results :P Quote
Guest Dave S Posted March 8, 2004 Report Posted March 8, 2004 The Galaxy CC system is awfull, nobody ever masters it. It's too smart for its own good, I spent Quote
